Thing is you probably need to rework your template depends on how much of customization you have for the site to work in good condition, using old template may look OK up front but it may have bugs here and there. So it could take lots of time if you have many customization. For that reason it makes sense to do the work on the new template which you probably will prefer to use over the old one
