Search by Distance

Can anyone help, search by distance fails to get my location.
I am running a local classifieds site and have downloaded the database for my area - Northern Ireland, however search by distance fails to get my location.
I eventually got the search by distance working however, the autocomplete on search by distance the main search be works perfectly but the search bar on the page with the map and circle only finds american cities and places. I have all the settings in the location set up for uk, any suggestions?
