Categories Search Dropdown

Is it possible to make the Categories Search Dropdown "multi-select" or have as "Checkboxes"?

For example,
A customer wants to buy audio-visual equipment, but a product such as a video camera could be listed in more than one category or sub-category.
So, rather than doing 3 different searches, they can
-choose sub-cat Camcorders from top-cat Cameras
-AND top-cat Electronics
-AND sub-cat DVD Audio from top-cat Music

That is, Search multiple categories and/or sub-categories at same one time.
If not, any suggestions for a work around?
