Category Question

Is it possible to put have sub-categories like the following example:

Category #1 -> Subcategory #1
Category #2 -> Subcategory #1

What I mean by that is I would like to have two parent categories, and inside each parent, I would like to have a copy of the same subcategory in each parent, or do I have to create separate categories for each parent?

A better understanding would be this:

Employment Listing Type

Help Wanted
Help Offered

I would like to put all my current categories in both help wanted and help offered is that possible or do I have to create the same categories again, with different keys?

Brian Your description is confusing? You talk about a category, subcategory and then your example starts with Listing Type, Category. But I think I see what you want to do.

The answer is that you have it back to front. In that Help Wanted and Help Offered should be listed as a Listing field, not a category. from my guide below

From the looks of your screenshot, I can only assume that you have used different category keys for each 'duplicated' category. Is that correct, or is there something I missed like copy category to another category feature?

To build sub-categories, look at the categories > categories and browse pages.
You need to create a sub-category and connect it to a main category.
If you want duplicate, you only need to make the "key" names different.

Yes, sub-categories within the main category, yes, that is correct, but I want to have the SAME subcategories for two different main categories. So for example:

Main Category - Help Wanted - Subcategory 1, Subcategory 2
Main Category - Help Offered - Subcategory 1, Subcategory 2

Note: Subcategory 1 and Subcategory 2 will be identical subcategories of the main category Help Wanted. That is my main goal. I think I had this awhile back, but what I did (not knowing if there was a different way to accomplish it) I created the same sub-categories for each main category using different category keys to do it, but is there a better way to duplicate them? A copy category button would be great, like how you can move a listing, that should be possible for categories too.

As far as I know, you can have duplicate sub-category names.
You only need to have different "Key" names and "URL" names.

Brian, I think you are doing this the wrong way around. but your call. You will NOT be able to make the SAME subcategory for 2 separate parent categories.
the best you will have is two separate subcategories with the same name.

By duplicating subcategories (which can happen very occasionally) yes they will need different names in the back end but a way too complicated structure for you and your users.

The current flynax script already does a good job of organising the categories within jobs they have reumes and Vacancies. I am not sure I can understand resumes? so I would delete that and possibly rename vacancies to something like? employment type or role or similar and I would have a listing field option then that can be applied to all categories in jobs as

help wanted
help offered

which even more confuses me when you say employment type Employment Listing Type as it seems to not belong in employment? it seems more a community thing?

Let me explain better, hopefully this will tie it up...

I would like to use the category structure over the fields in the case of the employment listing type...Why? Because I am trying to charge for Help Wanted category, BUT NOT CHARGE for Help Offered Category. I believe in Flynax, you can only charge per category vs. by the field. There is no built functionality to charge if the radio button was clicked (assuming, I clicked Help Wanted radio button, or choose from select menu). What would be the best way to do this? Remember, if using the category structure, there will be a Help Wanted and Help Offered category, then inside of each of those will be the sub-categories. but at this point I only know of one way to accomplish this, and that is to create the same sub-categories for the Help Wanted as Help Offered. Is this what I should do, or is there a better way to accomplish this task?

If people want Help, it usually means in 99% of cases they want free help, so why would you want people to pay for help? and people offering to help also do it for free 99% of the time.

In addition and just looking at the biggest jobs site here, the help section is not in jobs, and I doubt are in any jobs site? might be wrong but the big players here do not have it.

Where you normally find Help is in a community section of a site or a community-based site.

Below is the help section in a local community site / all free to use.

So for my call, I think it is a lot of wasted and difficult work to make it work the way you want it? and I would use listing fields and have it free. But if you want to run paid and free then yes you going to need to duplicate categories up as best I can see. best of luck with whatever you choose to do.

in your jobs listing type add two categories as you suggested / as you want this way you can make one paid and the other free.

LT > Employment
Cat > Help Offered (free)
Cat > Help Wanted (paid)
Cat > Plus all other categories in employment

But then instead of building duplicate subcategories in those 2 categories, build one listing field for both categories help offered and help wanted and in the listing field would be the names of the sub cats that you want.

So instead of building categories underneath just use a listing field with the cat names in it.

Cat >> Relationships

and you will see I have 4 subcategories listed

I am just tired, but I know exactly what you mean. Just create the two main cats, then use the category filter to show the subcategories in the sidebar, or where ever. That's what I have done, but I need to make the two main categories for Employment listing type, then all should be good to go.

Update: I think I am lost...But not too much. I have categories, you say you have 'categories' but as fields, not as normal categories. I have a category sidebar, which is what I am thinking you have done, but no, because in my case, I need actual categories to display the filter sidebar with categories. So my final question, how did you create the filed for categories to show like you did? Ex: What field type did you use?

it's a system listing field with a key 'category_id', in your case, the title of this field is Category

you put this field to your search form of some listing type

then go to Listings > Listings Types > your type > Edit > Search Settings > Number of category levels > select the number according to the category levels

now you'll have category dropdowns on your search form

I have tried the search form, and added the category field to the employment quick search form, but I don't see it on the front-end. I can confirm that it's on that form. What form should I add the category field to?

I have my employment sidebar currently setup to use the filter plugin, and employment filters. I then built the filter box with the category field. Is that what you mean? If not, I am not exactly sure your method.

Could you give me the steps to do it? I would like to stick with the employment category since this is where this all began.

The service is very fast, friendly, and they provide first-class service.
I make sure to post videos to speed up the process instead of me running in circles trying to explain and them trying to understand.
I also try to show my settings in the admin control panel and the result shown in the front of the website.

Sometimes, I also use photoshop to show a mock-up of what I am trying to achieve.

If you need the same scheme with listing types list as Pete has,

you should use the Additional Category Box on home page,

for that, you need to set in each of your listing types > Edit > Additional Category Box:

Position > the same position

Display first > 0

Display subcategories > No

Number of visible subcategories > 0

so when you go to home page and click, say, Employment, it will navigate you to the Employment page with categories in the filter box

Thanks for the tip, I think what Pete has is something a bit further. It looks like he has built the category structure from filters and data entries only, not using the category section at all. I was thinking along the lines if they changed the logic to the filter plugin as they did with the Loan / Mortgage Calculator plugin recently.

Thank you very much for your detailed video, I am at the 7:50 point in the video where you are about to describe how to do the subcategories using data entries. I *really* do appreciate that video, it goes along with the flow of how I would rather do my categories, because you are right, it's much quicker to just add a data entry and the category is complete. I am going to work in my employment listing type to see how this all works out.

Update: Pete, I have followed your instructional video. My end result (I think has to do with a customization I had done, to only display the category if an ad was posted to it), but under the Employment Subcategories header in the sidebar that I created following your instructional video, it says: No Listings Found, however, in the default category sidebar, it correctly shows 1 listings in the category, so I am not too sure if it's because of the customization, or not, but it seems to me like that is the case.

I *think* that has to do with a customization I had done, but if that is the case, let it be, I wanted the customization, I will not pull back on any customization for something new. I appreciate you instructional video. It was very help for me. Maybe someone else can else can comment? I have a change of heart towards this customization, if it is the case, and a customization can be done, what would it cost to complete?

Once you set it up remember you will need to add those fields (new listing fields) to your build listing form, then you will need to edit any test ads to those new listing fields per se for everything to work properly.

it wont add it to categories as it is a list feild, it will add the sub categories (listing field you built) you are trying to create?
