Anyone know how can I archive this effect where the listing image in the middle, and the gap on both side will have a translucent effect background base on the picture in the middle?

I thought there was a feature in the script that allowed a user to select the portion of the photograph they would like to use?
I looked at Graham and kiowa references staring at the screen and tried many experiment here and there with :after :before, but none work. Poor my newbie skill. Anyone has interested in this? It make your site looks much better for real.
