General category and common fields

Hi,

I have a set of fields that are common to all categories I have and I want to define them only once. I think about creating a general category and defining all the common stuff there but I don't want this category to be visible though. So is there any way of hiding such a general category and showing only it's children. Or do you have any better solutions?

I do not think it would be possible to hide the parent, but you can lock the parent.

Pete it is not good idea for hide category if you lock only. :( Because it will show. You cannot add listings in the locked category.


Would you please explain me where do you want to hide general category or you want to hide category from all front end of the site?
